Walking Groups - Please let us know in advance
The purpose of this project was to re-establish the village shop and to provide a central meeting point and focus for village activities and this has been successfully achieved.
The current home of the shop, in St Helen's Church Vestry, is on two major walking routes and we welcome lots of interesting, happy and sometimes chilly visitors in need of a cup of tea and homemade cake. We have a lovely garden in the church grounds where, on sunny days, you can enjoy a view of the river and sit under our oak tree admiring the Derbyshire hills.
As well as selling groceries, local produce, homemade cake, hot drinks and the famous Welbeck Artisan bread, we provide support for a number of local organisations. We act as an exchange for local information, organise a nationally renowned fundraising cylosportive every September and work with our church, to bring together groups such as the Grindleford Singers.
We are hoping to extend out indoor seating capacity at some point in the future but there is much work ahead as existing and new opportunities unfold, whilst continuing to run our community shop on a day-to-day basis.
We have been trading now for nearly five years and the impact on our village has been tremendous. We hope to continue for many more years, and are very happy to talk to anyone who is interested in setting up a community shop in their own area. We can thoroughly recommend it!
Our Management Team consists of a group of volunteers from the village with a wide range of backgrounds, skills and experiences, plus our two part-time managers.
The Team continue to work hard to pursue the best options on behalf of our 300+ members, our village residents, our visitors and local organisations.
Not one of us had actually run a grocery shop but, somehow, between us and our wonderful shop volunteers, we've managed to set up and run a successful little business!
